JSW Steel “Steel Path”

JSW Steel’s sales team struggled to keep track of customer information day to day. The orders, inventory and claims they need are spread across multiple platforms that can vary by steel facility.

Objective

Build a platform that combines this data in a way that is easy to navigate and understand, so sales and management can keep clients and themselves informed of the changing status of products.

Process

Research and challenges

Research included many discovery sessions with the people who would use the platform most: internal sales and management. With the client’s IT and technical teams, we found pain points and areas to improve, and worked out a visual information architecture that lets them gather information quickly.

The hard part was combining datasets that were presented inconsistently, not only from department to department but from location to location. I worked closely with the client to connect data points and create one consistent display. It was painstaking, and it proved invaluable to the design.

Design and development

The client trusted us to design mostly independently. They wanted to focus on user flows and how information is displayed rather than color schemes and spacing. With their branding elements in hand, I created a minimal style guide and built the product’s components in Figma. After seeing how their datasets were displayed in spreadsheets, I worked with the client to decide what was vital and what could be tucked away.

That gave us much cleaner detail screens without sacrificing any information. After reviews and iterations, we settled on a layout the client believed met our original goals.

Results and impact

The client has described how much time sales and management save gathering information for customers when efficiency is imperative. The application is currently used to view and export data, and discussions have begun about future versions with data input, reporting and more detailed tracking.

The client reports very positive feedback from the people using the application.
